Investigation into the effect of abattoir effluent on open hand dug wells and boreholes at Zangon Shanu Zaria Kaduna

Existence of abattoir in the midst of residents in Zangon Shanu Zaria post greater concern about the suitability of ground water for drinking and other domestic use in the area. In view of this, this research examined the effect of abattoir effluent on ground water quality at Zangon Shanu Zaria Kaduna State. Water samples were collected from six points including wells and boreholes in the study area. The water samples were tested for selected physical, chemical and biological parameters such as Total Dissolved Solid (88.6 – 173.1mg/L), Total Suspended Solid (60 – 240mg/L), Biological oxygen demanded (0.0 – 10mg/L), pH (6.95 – 7.89), turbidity (3.85 – 9.4NTU), Chemical oxygen demand (110 – 170mg/L), Temperature (26.2 – 26.9OC) and Chloride (15 – 38.5mg/L). The laboratory tets were carried out using standard analytical methods and procedures for water quality analysis. The results shows that ground water near slaughter house poses environmental and health risk to the users if not treated as the parameters examined shows the lowering of the water quality and making the groundwater unhealthy for drinking and other uses.
