A review on enhancing digital skills of rural dwellers through ICT: Bridging the digital divide

Abstract

This research explores various strategies to address the persistent digital divide in rural communities by focusing on improving digital literacy and increasing connectivity via information and communication technology (ICT). Acknowledging the distinct obstacles encountered by rural populations, such as restricted availability of high-speed internet and insufficient competency in digital skills, the study aims to find workable alternatives. The principal objective is to conduct a review focusing on enhancing the digital skills of rural dwellers through ICT with the aim of bridging the digital divide. The methodology adopted a traditional literature review approach to identify key concepts and evidence sources, both academic and grey literature, with the aim of informing practice, policy making, and addressing research gaps. A comprehensive investment strategy in high-speed internet and state-of-the-art digital infrastructure is required to close the identified gap. According to the study, deliberate expenditures on suitable gadgets and technologies for internet connectivity might gradually reduce the digital divide between urban and rural areas.
